Shinka - a head jewel raring to make a comeback!

Head jewels are back in vogue and with that, the ancient jewel from Gujarat - Shinka, too is expected to return in the fashion circut. You must be wondering why, what's so special about it. To that, my answer is, it's special from the word go.

Shinka has peacock designs linked by a series of heavy gold chains. The peacock motifs are further embedded with sapphires, emeralds and rubies. Turquoise stones are set in the central pieces. Tiny golden bells, with clusters of pearls hanging from them, add to the beauty of this unusual jewel. To hold Shinka in one place, there are many gold hooks that can be fastened to the hair.

Just so you know, it is essentially a bridal jewel. In some of the communities in Gujarat, it is worn only by the brides and therefore, it is a rare sight even in its home state. But the way, the jewellery trend is warming up to traditional and tribal designs to create statement pieces, you can be hopeful of Shinka too getting revived and making a roaring comeback.
