The world of gemstones is full of mysteries. Some cultures revere them as lucky charms while others believe in its power to ward off evil spirit. No wonder, with time, layers of myths and beliefs have surrounded every gemstone and Peridot is no different.

But before we delve into the mythical part, let us first know what is Peridot. Formed of the mineral Olivine, Peridot is also called Chrysolite and is often found in the rocks created by volcanoes. It can also be traced in meteors that fall on Earth.

In the ancient times, it was believed that Peridot had the power to dissolve enchantments and to drive evil spirits away. It was therefore, also called Gem Of The Sun. According to them, for Peridot to exert its full powers as a Talisman, it had to be set in gold. When worn as gold jewellery, it was said to dispel the terrors of the night. For protection against the wiles of evil spirits, this gemstone was pierced, strung into the hair of a donkey and then, worn on the left arm.

What's more! It also has medicinal benefits. In powdered form, Peridot was used as a remedy for asthma in olden days. Even to lessen the thirst due to fever, the patient were recommended to hold it under the tongue.
