Looking beyond the sheen of pure gold!

India's obsession with gold's purity is well known. We are so crazy about this yellow metal that even the sparkle of diamonds, rubies and emeralds do not appeal us as much. Reason? The religious beliefs that gold is auspicious and is a symbol of wealth. Owing to this traditional view, Indians could not look beyond pure gold.

However, in the recent times, the alloys of gold that are nothing like the original gold, are finding their feet. Before we delve into why their is a growth in popularity of its alloys let us first know which are they and how are they obtained.

FYI, rose gold is an alloy that is pinkish in colour. It is obtained by adding 25% copper in gold and with that, 14K gold jewellery is created. The elegant look and feel of the alloy has appealed to jewellery enthusiasts so much that rose gold jewellery now also comes studded with diamonds and other precious stones.

Besides rose gold, white gold is also a popular alloy of gold. It is made up of pure gold, mixed with metals that have a silvery-white colour, such as palladium and silver. As a result, 14K gold jewellery is obtained that radiates like silver. Sometime even nickel is also used to produce white gold. The jewellery crafted with white gold is further coated with rhodium. 

Now coming on to how these alloys managed to garner attention of the populace that is captivated by the charm of yellow metal. Firstly, they are alloys of gold. Secondly, Indians love to try out new things. So, when they had the options that double up as a combination that comprises of gold's auspiciousness as well as offers a variety of designs, they could not help but lap up. So, when are you moving on from pure gold to its alluring alloys? I am sure, the answer is right now.
