All about this Rajasthani jewellery art!

Meenakari is one of the most alluring form of adornment on jewellery, practised mainly in Rajasthan. It adds a dash of colours to the sheen of metals. With that, various designs that is carved on the metal surface find a new meaning. It adds colours that pop up against the metal beautifully. It infuses more realness to the whole creation. At times, it also tranforms a simple design into a masterpiece. No wonder, since many years, it has been the hero of many bridal collections

History? Hard to decide from where to begin. Whether to talk about its Persian origin or narrate about its glorious rise during the Raja Man Singh's rule in Mewar. Or should I tell you how it was merely used to adorn the back of Kundan jewellery, later moved on to become reversible jewellery and ultimately, carved its own niche in the glittering world of jewels. No matter from where I begin, the more you will explore, the more you get attracted to its mytical hues.

One more thing. In all, there are three types of Meenakari. What are they? Here you go...

Ek Rang Khula Meena

Only the gold outlines are visible, as the single transparent colour is used to cover the whole engraved area.

Panch Rangi Meena

In this form, five colours - green, light blue, dark blue, white and red, are used.

Gulabi Meena

Inspired by the pink blush of roses, pink is the dominant colour in this form of the art and is famously seen in the jewels of Varanasi.

Although Rajasthan is the major hub of Meenakari, thanks to global presence of jewellers like PNG Jewellers who deal in heritage jewellery, you can buy them from anywhere in the world.
